Welcome to Hopscotch Portland Road, a 68 place nursery which you can find near West Hove Infants School and opposite Westbourne Motors. Portslade railway station is a short walk away and we are served by bus routes 49, 46 and 2 which stop directly opposite the nursery.
Our nursery has an outside play area and five large, bright and spacious nursery rooms including a large indoor two-level softplay room. Our children love to burn off energy each session climbing the steps, whizzing down the slide into the ballpool, rocking on our giant see-saw or building with our large softblocks. Our children visit two nearby parks where they enjoy nature trails, games and activities. Our babies also benefit from daily walks in buggies.
The baby room has a calm, nurturing atmosphere and its own sensory area with lights, music and aromas which creates a stimulating environment for our youngest children. Our older children enjoy our new sensory room (opening Sept 08) which is equipped with soft flooring, lights and music and have the opportunities to explore different smells, sounds and textures.
Our classrooms are set up with interesting, educational areas by our Early Years Teacher, Clare, who leads her team delivering the EYFS curriculum enabling the children to discover and learn through first hand experiences. The children participate in activities in our art & craft, ICT and technology areas.
At the nursery we provide organic breakfast, milk and snacks for the children and we recycle as much as we can. We think it’s important to involve the children in environmental topics and encourage them with activities and discussion.
There is always something exciting happening at Hopscotch Portland Road for children and parents. We are very lucky to have regular visits from local fire brigade, police, dentist, the RSPCA and Major the guide dog, as well as Zoolab’s wiggly roadshow when the children can learn about and handle insects and other creepy crawlies. There are fun dressing up days, parents’ evenings, Christmas parties, carol concerts, summer parties, in addition to trips to the farm, the zoo and theatre.
Each year we choose three charity events – our children love getting involved in our fun activities to raise money. For example, in 2008 we supported “Kiya Survivors” which was founded by one of our parents, Suzy Butler. We helped raise money for their fourth project, a new orphanage in Peru which helps special needs and abandoned children www.kiyasurvivors.org
