Early Years Apprenticeships at Hopscotch Seven Dials: Katie’s Experience
As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re celebrating our apprentices across Hopscotch and sharing their stories. Throughout the week, we’re introducing the people who are learning, growing and building their careers with us.
Next up is Katie, an Early Years apprentice based at Hopscotch Seven Dials.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship in Early Years?
I had previously worked at a nursery in New Zealand, where the opportunity to work and study at the same time wasn’t available. When I saw the chance to do an apprenticeship that allowed me to learn while working, I jumped at it.
What does a typical day at the nursery look like for you?
My day usually starts by welcoming children at the door as they arrive for their day at nursery. I then join the Yellow Room, where I engage with the children and play alongside them. We sit together for stories, which I love, as it’s such a great way for everyone to take part in songs, stories and action songs.
I help the children sit for snack, making sure the area is ready and calm. After snack, the children have nappy changes, followed by free play, which is a great opportunity for child-led activities and understanding each child’s individual interests. Before morning story time, we head out into the garden so the children can enjoy fresh air and explore the world around them.
Later, we come together for story time again while lunch is prepared and hands are washed. After lunch, we get the children ready for nap time, supporting those who like to be rocked to sleep and making sure each child is safe and comfortable. Once the children wake up, nappies are changed, followed by more free play, another story time with songs and counting, and then tea or snacks. After a final nappy change, the children enjoy more play before it’s time to head home.
What’s your favourite part of the day?
My favourite part of the day is story time. I love how engaged and fascinated the children are, and how they learn through music, movement and song, which are some of the most effective tools for memory, learning and development.
What do you enjoy most about working with children?
Working with children is hard work and something you really need to be passionate about. I love this job because it allows you to see the world through their eyes, where everything feels exciting, wonderful and new. It’s also where kindness, generosity and empathy are learned. Children are our future, from future leaders and teachers to doctors and so much more.
Would you recommend doing an apprenticeship?
I would 100 percent recommend doing an apprenticeship. They are a financially wise choice and offer valuable on-the-job training, helping you develop so many important skills while you learn.
Can you share your fondest memory so far at Hopscotch?
Since joining Hopscotch, I’ve received amazing support, encouragement and opportunities to grow. My fondest memory has been building strong friendships and connections with both staff and children, and feeling truly supported and valued as part of the team.
Where do you see yourself professionally in five years?
In five years, I would love to have grown in my career, taken on more responsibility and continued learning as much as possible. My goal is to keep developing my knowledge and become a stronger practitioner over time.
Katie’s enthusiasm, care and commitment to learning shine through in everything she does. It’s been wonderful to see her grow as part of the Seven Dials team, and we’re excited to support her as she continues to develop her career with Hopscotch.
