National Apprenticeship Week
To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we spoke to Isabella, an Early Years apprentice at Hopscotch Peacehaven, about her experience of working in nursery, learning on the job and her plans for the future.
Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship in Early Years?
I chose an apprenticeship in Early Years because it allows me to gain hands-on experience while learning at the same time. I enjoy working with children and supporting their development, and I felt it was a good way to build practical skills, confidence and qualifications in a real nursery setting.
What does a typical day in nursery look like for you?
A typical day involves welcoming the children into nursery and providing breakfast if needed. I help with routines such as meals and naps while making sure the children feel safe and supported. It also includes observing their development, working as part of a team and helping to maintain a clean and engaging environment. There is always lots of fun activities and playtime, both indoors and outdoors.
What is your favourite part of the nursery day?
My favourite part of the day is interacting with the children, especially during garden time. I also really enjoy getting involved in creative activities like painting and messy play.
What do you enjoy most about working with children?
I enjoy watching them grow and reach their milestones. I love their creativity, honesty and enthusiasm. They always brighten up my day.
Would you recommend doing an apprenticeship in Early Years?
Yes, I would definitely recommend it. An apprenticeship provides valuable real-life, hands-on experience while gaining a qualification. It has really helped to build my confidence and develop my practical skills.
What has been your favourite memory so far at Hopscotch Peacehaven?
My fondest memory so far has to be going on walks with the children and talking about what they saw and heard during our little adventures.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
In five years, I see myself as a qualified and experienced practitioner. I hope to go on to do my teacher training and become a language teacher. I feel that working at Hopscotch gives me a great foundation to be able to go on and achieve the other things I want to do.
National Apprenticeship Week is a chance to recognise the important role apprentices play in our nurseries. We are proud to support apprentices like Isabella at Hopscotch Peacehaven and to be part of their learning and career journeys.
