National Apprenticeship Week: From Apprentice to Room Leader

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re celebrating the journeys our apprentices take at Hopscotch and the opportunities that can grow from learning while working. Alfreya’s story is a great example of how an apprenticeship can lead to long-term career progression.

Alfreya began her career at Hopscotch Seven Dials as an Early Years apprentice and is now a qualified Room Leader in our Yellow Room.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship in Early Years?
I chose an Early Years apprenticeship because I’ve always had a passion for working with young children. I felt that completing a Level 3 qualification would give me a strong foundation, allowing me to learn while gaining hands-on experience in the nursery.

What does a typical day at the nursery look like for you?
Every day at nursery is different and brings new and exciting experiences. This might include setting up engaging messy play activities, sharing stories with the children, or facilitating role-play sessions that encourage creativity and social interaction.

What’s your favourite part of the day?
My favourite part of the day is taking part in role play and small world activities with the children. It’s heart warming to watch their imaginations come to life as they interact with their friends and teachers.

What do you enjoy most about working with children?
I love observing the children express themselves creatively, whether through art, dance or imaginative play. Watching their confidence grow as they proudly share their work with others is incredibly rewarding.

Would you recommend doing an apprenticeship?
I would highly recommend doing an apprenticeship. The mix of learning and working has been really effective for me, as it allows me to link practical experiences directly to my coursework and retain information more easily.

Can you share your proudest moment at Hopscotch?
My proudest moment was being offered the position of Lead Practitioner in the Yellow Room after completing my apprenticeship. I felt a huge sense of pride taking on this role and really appreciate how my apprenticeship paved the way for this opportunity.

Where do you see yourself professionally in five years?
In the next five years, I see myself continuing to work with children and expanding my knowledge even further. I’m especially interested in learning more about how I can support children in a SEND capacity.

Alfreya’s journey from apprentice to room leader shows the real progression opportunities available at Hopscotch. Her dedication, warmth and commitment to continued learning make her a valued leader within the Seven Dials team.
