It’s STEM Week at Hopscotch Holiday Club, and the children have been getting hands-on with all sorts of exciting science experiments. From fizzy reactions to colourful creations, one of their favourites has been making lava lamps!

The children loved watching the colours swirl and bubble, learning how different liquids separate and how fizzing reactions can make things move. It’s a brilliant way to combine fun and learning - and the best part is, you can make one at home too.

How to Make Your Own Lava Lamp at Home

You’ll need:

  • A clear plastic bottle or jar
  • Food colouring
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil
  • A fizzing bath bomb (or fizzy tablet)

Steps:

  • Mix a few drops of food colouring into some water.

  • Pour vegetable oil into your clear bottle until it’s about three-quarters full.

  • Add your coloured water on top and watch as it separates from the oil.

  • Drop in a fizzing bath bomb and watch your lava lamp come to life!

Top tip: Shine a torch underneath in the dark for an extra glowing effect.
