We have a passionate and long-standing team of practitioners, who work in partnership with parents to create an exciting, fun and educational learning environment. Working together, our learning environment is created by our children, for our children.
Using the framework of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, children at our West Hove nursery learn through play at their own pace. This allows us to enhance upon the foundation for learning and future development.
As a team, we value learning and believe in nurturing our children’s potential and achievements. In a safe, clean, healthy environment, we are able to build on children’s self-esteem, confidence and sense of self.
Our staff engage in continuous training to ensure that our knowledge is always current. We follow Brighton’s QuILT (Quality Improvement in Learning and Teaching) programme, which encourages early years practitioners to improve quality through information gathering, action planning, implementation, evaluation and moderation.
Hopscotch has been awarded many QuiLT Credits over the years in all areas, including 3 Gold QuiLT awards providing further recognition of our exceptional learning environment.
We have been awarded Good in all areas in 2021. See our latest – Good Ofsted Inspection Report
We are dedicated to providing healthy food and drink for children – and all of our nurseries provide the option of Little Tums meals which have been awarded the Brighton & Hove Healthy Choice Award or a national Outstanding Food Award.
This means you can have peace of mind when choosing a nursery in Portslade or Hove that all the food we provide is nutritionally well-balanced. The award is provided by specialist nutritionists who carry out a full assessment to ensure that all meals offered are the healthier option and are as low as possible in salt, fat and sugar.
We cater for a range of diets and intolerances, while also offering parents who decide to provide their own snacks or food with free healthy eating guidance.
Our West Hove nursery has an outside play area, five large, bright and spacious nursery rooms including a large indoor two-level softplay room. Our children love to burn off energy each session climbing the steps, whizzing down the slide into the ball-pool, rocking on our giant see-saw or building with our large soft-blocks. All of our rooms are furnished to a high standard with Community Playthings wooden equipment.
The baby room has a calm, nurturing atmosphere with soft lighting, music, aromas and a cosy area to promote emotional wellbeing. It also has its own specialist equipment for babies to develop their physical skills when starting to crawl and walk, creating a stimulating environment for our youngest children.
Our older children enjoy our sensory room which is equipped with soft flooring, lights and music and have the opportunities to explore different smells, sounds and textures.

The Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo) will explain how the individual needs of the children can be met using the IEP planning strategies and targets. Advice will always be taken from professionals and specialist support teams as necessary. The SENDCo works closely with the Key Person, monitoring the IEP targets for your child. They also work with other practitioners to ensure the provision is appropriate and relevant. See our Local Offer for further information.

My name is Lorraine Brown and I joined Hopscotch in 2017. I am a qualified childcare practitioner with 18 years’ knowledge and experience as well as a Diploma in Leadership and Management. In 2016 I was a finalist for a national award for training and development and in 2014 was a finalist for the NMT Award for Best New Business for a Nursery.
