Learning Through Making

Woodwork is about much more than learning how to use a hammer.

Children can start with an idea, choose their materials and work out how to turn what they have imagined into something real. Sometimes things work first time and sometimes they don’t. Working out what to try next is all part of the experience.

Through making, children build confidence, independence and resilience. They learn to keep trying, solve problems for themselves and feel proud of what they have achieved.

Real Tools, Real Experiences

At Hopscotch Workshop, children have the opportunity to use real tools in a safe, carefully supported and age-appropriate environment.

Measuring, marking, hammering and joining materials all require patience and concentration. Children quickly learn that they need to slow down, think about what they are doing and take care with the tools in their hands.

Giving children this responsibility can bring out an incredible level of focus. It also shows them that we trust them to learn new skills and have a go.

Skills for the Big Wide World

There is a lot of learning packed into a piece of woodwork.

Using tools helps children develop their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and strength. Measuring and building introduce ideas around size, shape, position and space, while talking about their plans helps children learn new words, explain their thinking and share ideas with others.

They are also learning what to do when something doesn’t quite work, how to make their own decisions and how good it feels to keep going until they find a solution.

These are skills that reach far beyond the Workshop.

Woodwork Is for Everyone

At Hopscotch, we want every child to feel that woodworking is something they can have a go at.

Introducing tools and making from an early age helps challenge the idea that certain activities are only for boys or only for girls. Instead, children can explore their own interests and find out what they enjoy without those stereotypes getting in the way.

Everyone can design, build, make and create.

"I Made That!"

One of our favourite parts of woodwork is seeing the pride children have in something they have made themselves.

There is no expectation for every creation to look the same. Children can follow their own ideas, make choices, experiment and change their minds along the way.

The finished creation is lovely, but everything that happened while making it matters too.

That moment when a child looks at what they have created and says, "I made that!" is what Hopscotch Workshop is all about.
